She sends him off to capture the culprit, who now aims to take over the throne from the king. We should support more local Asian productions like this.In 16th century Java, after his parents are killed by a rogue martial artist, Wiro Sableng is rigorously trained by a benevolent silat master. I’ll wait patiently for it to be released on Blu-ray. For a film with only a budget of US$2 million to go so under the radar, despite being an entertaining show with decent fight scenes, it feels like such a waste. I have no idea if Wiro Sableng 212 is going to be released internationally outside of Asia. By the time I saw it on 22 October, the movie was already nearing the end of its run, just 11 days after release! The cinema hall had less than 10 patrons when I watched it, and I think I was the only non-Malay / non-Indonesian. I didn’t even know that it existed until my friend spotted that poster. Unfortunately, there was very little local marketing done for the film. It made its way here to Singapore with a release date of 11 October, 2018. Wiro Sableng 212 was originally released in Indonesia in August 2018, and it’s apparently based on a popular Indonesian fantasy novel series. The film does end with a satisfying and decisive shounen-style finale against an overwhelmingly powerful foe, as Wiro and gang must figure out a way to defeat him. But due to time constraints, they are not given any chance to develop. Wiro and gang face a dangerous female assailant later in the film who is able to use her feminine charms to incapacitate men, forcing Anggini and another female ally to defend the group.Īll of these characters and antagonists feel like they have cool, interesting backstories. He’s able to channel ice (!) into his fists, using them to counter the poison attacks of a foe.
Bujang Gila Tapak Sakti (yup, that’s his full name in Indonesian), calls himself the “Mad Mighty Fists”. Anggini, a female fighter with a drunken master, fights using her long sleeves, giving her a reach-advantage that Wiro normally does not have. Sadly, the movie feels a bit rushed (despite the two-hour runtime) once he meets up with other allies.
The protagonist even uses airbending attacks, kamehameha-style. Think of the film as an action-comedy with some fantasy elements. If that description above sounds a bit like classic Dragon Ball, then that’s the best show I can compare Wiro Sableng 212 to.
But master and pupil both have a strong heart of gold under all that silliness: They believe in using their martial prowess for good and to vanquish evil. He acts like a kid when interacting with strangers, and his master is an old hermit who is just as wacko. The protagonist, Wiro, is a strong and reliable warrior, but he’s a little bit kooky on the inside. Silat is an Indonesian martial art, renowned for its kicks and attacks from varying angles, and it’s depicted in Wiro Sableng 212 with very convincing fight choreography. Within the first five minutes I was already hooked by the martial arts action, sprinkled with little bits of humour. I had no idea what Wiro Sableng 212 was about, except that it was under the “action comedy” genre.
I hate previews of any kind, and believe strongly in the principle of “going in blind”. My friend was unable to watch because of work, and there was only one screen timing left at one specific cinema.īefore I continue, I would like to reiterate very strongly again, that I do not watch movie trailers. Me: … you want to watch this show purely because of the movie poster?įriend: Wiro Sableng has an IMDB rating of 8.0 out of 10?!! Ok, now I really want to watch this.įast forward two weeks later on 22 October, and I’m watching Wiro Sableng 212 by myself. Before we entered the cinema hall, one movie poster caught my friend’s eye:įriend: This… looks awesome! We should watch it. The show was fine, nothing fantastic but definitely undeserving of its low score on Rotten Tomatoes (one reason why I don’t trust websites for movie reviews any more). I watched Venom early last month with a friend.
